Civil War Talks in May

There are several other Civil War lectures being given this month, in addition to the Second Mondays talk on caring for the dead during the Civil War that is being held in our building on May 14th:

Civil War Lecture: Confederate Monuments

When: May 12, 2012, 3:00 – 4:00 PM

Where: NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort, NC

Tom Vincent of the Government Records Branch will discuss the Confederate monument movement and how women’s organizations pushed the idea of memory and sacrifice through these stone memorials. Beginning in 1868 and continuing through the present groups have been raising money and erecting monuments to commemorate the American Civil War. Free. Lecture: Unionism in Eastern North Carolina

Christopher Meekins of the State Archives of North Carolina will speak at the annual meeting and symposium of The North Carolina Military Historical Society. See for more information. [Updated to add, 3/11/2012: Also at this meeting, Kenny Simpson of the State Archives of North Carolina Military Collection will speak on Major General William Dorsey Pender and Josh Howard of the North Carolina Office of Archives and History will speak on  “The North Carolina Civil War Death Study.”]
